Prune is largely known as a healthy food which is very beneficial for the intestinal tract. People often drink the juice to alleviate or prevent constipation. But few people know its anticancer properties.
A recent European study by the Istituto Superiore di sanità (Italian Higher Institute of Health) has found prune, mainly Prunus spinosa, a type of plum (prune) that grows mostly in Europe, western Asia, and locally in northwest Africa, can kill up to 78% of tumor cells. The finding was revealed at the International Research Congress on Integrative Medicine and Health (IRCIMH), which took place in Rome from 17 to 19 April, by the researcher Stefania Meschini, a researcher of Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome.
Prune and Cancer Cells
Some powerful antioxidants in Prunus spinosa can reduce the survival of cancer cells by 78%. Consume regularly, prune can not only prevent the proliferation of cancer cells but also cause them to commit suicide. Meschini stated, “We have treated patients with colon cancer, lung and cervix. We observed that only the extract had no effect. However, combined with a particular mixture (amino acids, minerals and vitamins), it could reduce the survival of cancer cells by 78% in just 24 hours.”
Prune Juice and Colon Cancer
Another study on animals has shown that the consumption of prunus may increase the antioxidant capacity of the body and reduce certain risk factors for colon cancer. The research has demonstrated that certain compounds contained in prune could reduce the growth and differentiation of human colon cancer cells. It is like saying regular intake of prune juice and colon cancer cells are enemies.
Prune Juice and Breast Cancer
There are more exiting findings about prune. It has also been demonstrated in vitro that the juice of the fruit could help reduce the viability and inhibit the proliferation of various malignant cells, including breast cancer. But the researchers say clinical studies in humans are needed to confirm these effects. Meanwhile, cancer patients are encouraged to increase the fruit in their diet.
Prune Juice for Cancer Patients
It is safe to consume prunes during cancer treatment. In fact, the researchers hope for the fruit to be soon available in pharmacies, but combined with other anticancer elements. The therapeutic mixture will be offered initially as a complement to chemotherapy. A patent has been filed and the product will soon be available in Europe. Meanwhile, further testing is being conducted to allow the proposing of a new form of chemotherapy with plum-Can association.
Colon Cancer and Prunes
Prunes are rich in phenolic compounds which are rich in antioxidant properties, particularly advantageous to neutralize the oxidizing effects of free radicals on the DNA in our cells.
Through their antioxidant properties, some compounds in prunes help reduce inflammation of the colon, and thus prevent the onset of cancer. Thus, this allows to prevent the development of the tumor. A US study by the Texas A&M University and University of North Carolina, finds that a diet containing prunes would be particularly effective in reducing the risk of development of colorectal cancer, now in third position as the most fatal cancers in the world.
Prune juice and colon cancer fighting properties are now clearly demonstrated, say the scientists. It is certain that regular consumption of prunes would provide a significant reduction in developing the disease, or reducing its symptoms in patients already diagnosed with the condition. The fruit attacks the problem from the base by fighting against disturbances of the intestinal flora, the very ones that cause chronic inflammation, the cause of many colon cancers.
