Banana and Cancer

Banana, usually yellow when ripe, is an essential part of the diet of some regions worldwide. It is estimated that bananas and plantains are an important food source for more than 400 million people in tropical countries around the world. Globally, they are the fourth basic food commodity after rice, wheat, and corn. Two other major advantages of having banana in many poor rural areas is the fact it can be produced without interruption throughout the year, and it is high in nutritional value: vitamins A, C and B6, and others.

Rich in antioxidants, eating banana could prevent the onset of many diseases, including certain cancers. In addition, it contains healthy sugars which help in maintaining good gastrointestinal health. It is a very energetic fruit, about 90 kilocalories / 100 g, and very rich in potassium, which can cover the daily requirements. Banana Cancer Fighting Properties

A prospective study, conducted among 61 000 Swiss women to determine if banana kills cancer cells, demonstrated a link between high consumption of fruits and the least risk of suffering from kidney cancer. Of all the fruits in the study researchers found bananas have the strongest effects against cancers. Eating this nutritious fruit has the same beneficial effect on preventing the development of colorectal cancer. A further study on banana and colon cancer shows both men and women receive the same benefits.

Well ripe banana and cancer connection was also considered. Amazingly, ripe banana found to be among the top cancer-fighting foods. According to a research by a group of Japanese universities, bananas consumed completely ripe, which presents a blackened skin or intense yellow and covered with very dark spots, activate the immune system cells, specifically neutrophils and macrophages, two powerful NK (natural killer) that are responsible for the production of a substance called Tumor necrosis factor (TNF, tumor necrosis factor alpha) which is essential to inhibit formation of cancer cells and viral replication.

Banana and Cancer Prevention

According to these studies, to prevent cancer, you must consume ripe bananas, ones that have their skin turns black or covers with many dark spots. It is then the fruit will be able to activate cells that will prevent abnormal cell growth through TNF alpha. Other studies on banana and breast cancer also show women who consume the fruit regularly can reduce their risk of developing the disease. The more you eat bananas the better your body is provided with an essential immunological protection in the fight against all cancers.

Although there are no major studies on banana and prostate cancer, it is suggested to men to consume this nutritious fruit daily in order to protect their kidneys as well as prostate gland. It is important that the banana is well ripe. The darker is the skin, the more alkaline is the banana, thus more successfully enable the function of white blood cells in the blood to fight cancerous cells.
