Brussels Sprout Anti Cancer Properties

Brussels sprout, although much smaller, has the same powerful protective and anticancer nutrients as cabbages. They are rich in health nutrients which play major role in the area of DNA protection. A recent study shows improved stability of DNA inside white blood cells following daily consumption of the vegetable in the amount of 10 ounces or more. Brussel sprouts kill cancer cells by using the immune system to attack the tumor.

Brussels Sprouts and Breast Cancer

Indoles (Indole-3-carbinol) found in Brussels sprout has the effect of stimulating the liver, which then easily breaks down estrogen. This would allow women who transform estrogen quickly to be less vulnerable to breast and uterus cancers. Some experimental researches demonstrate that accelerating the metabolic transformation of estrogen and its elimination reduces the potentially harmful effects of the hormone.

In addition, indoles help stimulate the production of certain enzymes that help rid the body of cancer-causing toxins. They would be useful in the fight against cancers of the colon, breast and prostate. One of the main substances in Brussels sprouts is sulforaphane. It works by triggering the release of enzymes that help rid the cells of toxic waste, strengthen the immune system, reducing the risk of cancer.

According to Professor Xianghong Zou, of The Ohio State University, “in more than 50% cases of breast cancer present abnormal high levels of Cdc25A phosphatase”, which confirms the crucial role of indole-3-carbinol in the treatment of these cancers, among others. Having tested the effectiveness of I3C in mice with “breast cancer”, the specialist observed very encouraging results: the size of the tumor was reduced on average by over 65%. Pr Zou also observed that high levels of Cdc25A phosphatase are also present in the cancers of prostate, liver, esophagus, colon, as well as in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Brussel Sprouts and Cancer Prevention

A new study on mice has confirmed the benefits of broccoli and Brussels sprouts in cancer prevention. These two powerful cruciferous vegetables contain a substance, indole-3-carbinol (I3C), which would oppose the proliferation of cancer cells. The research was conducted by researchers at the University of Columbus who show, in fact, that I3C is able to destroy an absolutely essential molecule in the division and proliferation of cancer cells, the Cdc25A phosphatase.

Brussel Sprouts and Prostate Cancer

A small study in the Netherlands showed that people who had absorbed every day for a week more than 250 grams of Brussels sprouts, the equivalent of 14 sprouts per day, had 23 % more protective enzymes against cancer, than people who never ate this vegetable. The men has less risk of prostate cancer.

In another study, it was found that participants who consumed the same amount of sprouts had a 25% decrease degenerative DNA damage compared to those who did not consume sprouts Brussels. This is an important finding, since to be healthy, it is necessary that the DNA in our cells is healthy.

Other Benefits

In addition to cancer fighting properties, Brussels sprout provides an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and fiber. It contributes to the prevention of constipation and troubles of the digestive tract. Its high vitamin C helps boost the immune system and their high folate protects against cardiovascular disease and birth defects.

The best way to eat Brussels sprouts is certainly cook with steam or completely raw in salad or juice mixed with other vegetables or fruits. Avoid prolonged cooking which destroys many of the important nutrients.
