A recent study by Dr. Paul Davis, University of California, has shown that eating walnuts regularly reduces the presence of the hormone IGF1(insulin-like growth factor 1), which is one of the elements responsible for the development of the risks of colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer causes a great majority of men in the US (as well as in other countries all over the world) to lose their life early. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer. The disease is so common that it kills nearly 50,000 men every year in the United States alone. But do you know you can prevent prostate cancer by eating a handful of walnuts every day?
According to a recent study published in the journal “Journal of Medicinal Food”, eating walnuts every day could reduce the chances of developing prostate cancer. The good news not only the nut (including its oil) works as a prostate cancer prevention but it also has the property to slow tumor growth, which makes it ideal for men already diagnosed with the disease. Scientists behind the study have observed that the tumor progression in mice was stopped by feeding them (the mice) walnuts every day.
The rodents were fed nuts and nut-based foods for 8 weeks (2 months). The researchers have found that not only walnuts reduced the progression of prostate cancer cells in the mice but also reducedcholesterol and significantly increased the level of insulin to combat diabetes. In previous studies, walnuts have already been shown to protect against breast cancer and heart disease. Walnuts are already tasty, with so many health benefits, people need to increase their intake.
Walnut is so rich in many nutrients that some scientists consider it as a superfood. The nut is high in a variety of health boosting chemicals, such as omega-3, a polyunsaturated fatty acid which is essential for many functions of our body, including our skin and brain health. In fact, some consider walnuts as the ultimate brain food. With decline in the brain functions with age, walnuts are good for the older population who want to age with their brain healthy and memory fully intact.
According to this latest study and many others, it is clear that the war against fats led the US government causes more harms than good. The problem is bad fats: butter, lard, whole milk, ice cream, cream, cheese and high-fat meats (such as bacon); not health fats: walnut oil, olive oil, flax seed oil, avocado oil, hemp seed oil, etc.
Walnut, which is a fatty food, is a perfect example that the idea of getting rid of fats in a diet for it to be healthy is not scientifically proven. Just one handful of walnuts daily reduces the risk for cancers (prostate cancer, breast cancer and others), diabetes, heart disease, memory decline, and the list goes one.
